Animal Sanctuary Signage
Role: Design Director, Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge
Challenge: The sanctuary’s on site signage was makeshift and inconsistent, printed pages laminated and zip tied to fences and gates, easy to overlook and not reflective of the organization’s brand. Signage needed to cover a wide range of purposes, from directional and safety notices for visitors, to educational content about the animals and their care, to day to day operational updates like path closures. Everything needed to be durable enough for an outdoor farm environment, easy to read at a glance, and consistent with the refuge’s visual identity.
Solution: I designed a full system of weatherproof signage that replaced the old laminated pages with a cohesive, branded look across the property. Using the refuge’s earthy green and gold color palette, along with simple hand drawn style icons of the animals, I created signs for wayfinding and visitor guidelines, safety notices like quarantine areas and cows on the path, and educational placards explaining things like the Aviary and animal enrichment practices. Keeping the tone warm and approachable, with playful touches like a friendly “Hello!” greeting sign, helped the signage feel welcoming rather than purely instructional, while still clearly communicating important information to visitors and volunteers.
